It’s just toward end which begins to fall apart, although slap-up finale rescues it regarding ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and smartly dialogued, it has zero higher challenge inside life down their incredibly unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Movie Bulletin told you “The movie moves during the an easy pace, this new conversation was advanced and you may characterisations generally effective. Cock Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes head the fresh shed skillfully, just like the investigator was played with big aplomb of the see your face personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]

The latest film’s copywriter and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess game, to have mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) did on casino and you will dated a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic script, the newest cast’s suavely controlled gestures out of love and you will menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly cocky images (and their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really detailed spectacle a hidden antique of one’s style.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, due to the fact an authorities inspector, in addition to in the get . Whilst the area follows a common development, new characterizations was new in addition to performances suitable to help you overbalance. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice absolutely nothing lady just who brings about the finest in your and you may Ellen Drew is the sleek and slinky vixen just who becomes your with the jams. Thomas Gomez is oily while the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a separate ready trip just like the a weary cops inspector which in the end closes the case. A great amount of consuming and you may puffing is performed of the every alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
